Summary: "Part of East Tennessee"

I enjoyed reading the Hidden History of East Tennessee. It is easy to go from story to story and never lose interest. I also thought the categories were well chosen. It is a great light read for those who just want short stories. Over all, I was disappointed in the fact that it wasn't very detailed. I understand it was written as newspaper articles and put together, but if you are looking for an in depth history of the region you will need supplemental reading. It also tends to focus on the author's favorite county, McMinn County. While a lot has happened in McMinn County, I felt it was over proportionately represented in the text. There are many areas of the region that have played more important roles, the Cumberland Gap area for example, in the state's history. While the Civil War section was interesting, I feel more time should have been spent on the battles in Knoxville and what Tennessee meant as a whole to the war, which is relevant in explaining why East Tennessee was such a watched place by both sides.
In all fairness, this book was not supposed to document everything that has occurred in the region. It is very entertaining and worth reading, but if you are looking for a detailed version of all of East Tennessee's history, you will be left with questions.

Summary: "A really good synopsis of East Tennessee History"

I am glad I ordered this book. It will have a permanent space in my records. Several of my ancestors migrated through Tennessee and, this little book sort of tied all their stories together.

Summary: "not "true" east tennessee"

This book, though well written and very informative, is not really a history of "east Tennessee". Most of the book deals with Monroe and McMinn counties. There's a whole lot more of Tennessee east of Monroe and McMinn counties!
